Very cheap, but that's exactly what we need. Don't plan to do any cooking (other than PCBs of course) with the pan you choose for this task. Just make sure it has a flat surface, so the PCB is heated up homogeneously.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;b&gt;Stenciling:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;To apply the solder paste on the pads, you can use a stencil. It can be made of acrylic plastic (cheap) or metal (expensive, but lasts longer). I got mine on the following website: &lt;a href="http://www.smtstencil.co.uk/"&gt;http://www.smtstencil.co.uk/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The guy who runs this website is very nice, and the price is not so expensive if you live in the EU (even better for UK residents). It took about a week to arrive, as I chose the cheapest shipping option. Using a stencil is better if you plan to do a few prototypes or even a production run. It can also be useful for a single board if you have a lot of SMD components (as the paste might dry if the application takes too long).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;You can find a very good video tutorial (which I followed myself for this board) on how to apply the solder paste to the board with a stencil at &lt;a href="http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/58"&gt;Sparkfun&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WDIqtGMROjM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;If you don't want to use a stencil, you can still use a sharp object (like a needle) to apply some paste on each pad. This is actually quite fun to watch!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;b&gt;Cooking:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Once everything is ready, put the pan on the hob, the PCB on the pan, and turn the heat all the way up. As you can see, mine is a diecast iron hob, so it took about 8 minutes to reach that point.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The melt will start in the center of the board, so even for small boards, what you want to do is to move it around to let the edges of the board melt as well without overheating/frying the center. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;And that's it! Usually it's better to design your board so that there are both SMD and thru hole components on the same side. Use the technique described here to solder the SMD first, then the thru hole. Any pan would do the job, just make sure the surface is flat. Also, once you used a pan to do some soldering, don't plan on cooking with it anymore, solder paste can contain lead and other poisonous materials, so keep this one for your DIY stuff only.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note: do NOT try this with an induction plate. I haven't tried but the EM field used to heat the pan can be bad for your components. You need preferably a diecast iron hob, I haven't tried with a gas hob, but I guess it could heat up faster (and would be easier to control).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once everything is ready, just put the board in the middle of the frying pan, turn the heat to the maximum, and wait.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep your eyes on the board, to check when the solder paste starts to melt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On my experiment, the fusion point occurred at 180°C, starting by the centre of the pan, and quickly moving to the edge. Also, it costed half the price I paid for the first version of the motherboard (though it was bigger) and I got 12 units against one, for the price of ten! And did I mention it took only half the time to manufacture it (2 weeks instead of a month).. And yes, there was one.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The Mobius was made modular. That means if you need a looper with 5 loops before the amplifier and 3 in the FX loop, you can have that, as well as one with all 8 loops in a single chain. This allows the Mobius to adapt to the guitarist/bassist's set. But we can push the idea further.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;A few remarks I have been given were that it was not possible to switch stereo effects without using two mono loops, and that there was no possibility to have parallel loops. This is now over! By introducing Stereo Send/Return modules, we can now switch stereo effects with only one module. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This is one example of what the modularity gives. Instead of checking which message was read, connect a function to a type that will be called back (hence the name) when a message of this type is received. The data is passed in the function's parameters so you no longer need to call MIDI.getType, MIDI.getData1 etc.. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Also, version 3.1 corrects a few bugs on Thru, Running Status and the interleaving of RealTime messages. If you had troubles with your MIDI-equipped sound card, give a try to this update, the trouble might be caused by Active Sensing messages messing around with other types.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div type='text'>Native MIDI USB Controllers with Arduino</title><content type='html'>I was recently contacted by Paul from the &lt;a href="http://www.pjrc.com/teensy/"&gt;Teensy&lt;/a&gt; project to port the &lt;a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/arduinomidilib/"&gt;Arduino MIDI Library&lt;/a&gt; to his board, to be able to send and receive MIDI messages over the USB port and make it so that the board would be recognised as a MIDI controller in any DAW (or software handling MIDI).&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;More recently, I also noticed that the &lt;a href="http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardUno"&gt;Arduino Uno&lt;/a&gt; has a dedicated USB chip (no longer the good old FT232RL) that can be programmed to act as any USB device (eg: MIDI).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;These boards usually have a serial port in addition to the USB communications, which allows to kludge MIDI plugs and to get the perfect MIDI controller, just by adding sensors and programming the behaviour.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This is the development line for the next release of the library, to be Photos and videos to come.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In a nutshell, here are the features of release One (more details below):&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;8 True-Bypass loops with silent switching action.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;2 independent groups of loops + modular design.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;32 banks of 4 presets each.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;MIDI Input &amp;amp; Ouput.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;LCD display, for naming banks and presets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Live mode.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;Okay, so now, how does it work?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This is simple: when you have a lot of stompboxes, and want to switch from a sound to another, it sometimes involves a lot of stomping. These actions can get you out of rhythm, and you might want to keep your attention on your playing, not on your feet.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The Mobius is a helper, it switches automatically your effects for you, when you kick only one footswitch. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;What does modular means?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We saw previously that the Mobius has two independent groups of loops. Two inputs and two outputs. You can use this to put some pedals before your amplifier, and the others in the FX loop. as the two groups are totally isolated, there will be no grounding problem. Most commercial loopers have a fixed configuration, but here you can choose how many pedals you want in each group. The Mobius adapts itself to your rig.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;What about MIDI?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;With the MIDI input, you can remotely control the Mobius from an existing MIDI foot controller. As the chassis is rack-friendly, you can even mount it and switch between your racked stompboxes and effect processors.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;With the MIDI output, you can change presets of your MIDI-capable effects while kicking them in the loop. (up to 5 MIDI messages can be sent per preset). The main idea here is to keep it simple not to charge the Bill of Materials too much, but keeping a high quality analog waveform on the output. Other response curves (like volt per hertz) might be added if it fits in the memory.&lt;p&gt;Next: benches, pictures, videos and samples, of course!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The analog output shall be a 10Vpp centered Sawtooth wave. This is the basis for building other classical waveforms such as Pulse, Triangle and Sine. The same principle is used here, with slight variations:&lt;/div&gt;  &lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The master clock is based on a 16 MHz crystal.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The counter is 16 bits wide, with a prescale circuit allowing the pre-division of the master clock for more precision in both the lower and higher frequencies. (just think of it as the gears in a car).&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;So far, I tried it without the analog modulation inputs, and I found that the square output was more precise than the output of the frequency generator app on my iPod touch.. And a lot cleaner!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;  &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Here is the graph of the theoretical errors (in cents) over the MIDI note pitch range (0 to 127, equivalent to 8,17 to 12543,8 Hz):&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DV_F0F2TikE/TOhWB-hWIkI/AAAAAAAAAR0/vlFIv93aUVI/s1600/image.png"&gt;&lt;img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DV_F0F2TikE/TOhWB-hWIkI/AAAAAAAAAR0/vlFIv93aUVI/s400/image.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541773933442114114" style="text-align: center;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 100px; " /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;You can see that the maximum error is 0.6 cent (the human ear can detect pitch errors when higher than 5 cents). And this is located in the end of the audio range (where the note is barely audible). cependant quand on cherche à faire des applications pratiques avec, qui ne nécessitent pas (ou plus) de prototypage, débuggage ou autres reprogrammations, ils sont assez peu appropriés.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;J'ai donc pensé à une carte qui contiendrait très peu de choses (le strict minimum, à savoir le µC, un quartz, ses condensateurs, et la résistance de pull-up pour le reset), de petite taille (tout le monde en CMS), et de forme carrée pour limiter la place. Ca parait simple, mais ça évite pas mal de répétition de code, pour faire par exemple un bouton en one-shot qui incrémente un compteur, si on reste appuyé dessus et qu'on utilise digitalRead(), le compteur va monter en flèche. &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;J'ai donc défini des modes d'utilisation pour les boutons:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(255, 153, 0);"&gt;OneShot&lt;/span&gt;: Ne renvoie ON qu'une fois par cycle d'appui du bouton (littéralement, compter les ON revient à compter le nombre de fois que le bouton est appuyé).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(255, 153, 0);"&gt;Memory&lt;/span&gt;: Renvoie ON lorsque le bouton est appuyé, mais aussi Pressed lors du front montant, et Released lors d'un front descendant.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(255, 153, 0);"&gt;Timer&lt;/span&gt;: un système de Hold, renvoie ON tant que le bouton est appuyé, s'il l'est pendant suffisament longtemps (ce temps est réglable), il revoie Hold.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Les autres modes sont des combinaisons de ces trois-ci. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href="http://frankyfuzzfire.free.fr/DIY/Arduino/Buttons_Library.zip"&gt;[ Télécharger la librairie - L'idée du rack s'impose donc..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ce qui est faisable, pour l'instant, juste des idées jetées sur papier..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Une version rack du PSU, sorties en AC (9V pour la plupart des racks du commerce, 24V pour les lampes BT, distribution des prises IEC 230V pour les racks possédant une alim interne). Le principe est de n'avoir aucune rectification DC dans le PSU, pour que tout soit isolé.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Un préampli à lampes (bien entendu)... Cela dit avec 6 switchs il est tout à fait possible de faire simplement 6 presets directement accessibles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pour ce qui est de l'organisation du signal, soit je trouve un moyen de placer une matrice de routage à l'intérieur pour organiser l'ordre des relais (compliqué, mais puissant, on peut router en parallèle, en stéréo, ect..) soit tous les relais sont routés en série (et il vaut mieux alors avoir des effets déjà ordonnés).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Le contrôleur que j'ai repéré possède deux bus de communication en série, ce qui signifie que l'un d'entre eux sera consacré au MIDI (in &amp;amp; out), et l'autre au pilotage d'un module LCD (plus pratique pour la programmation en vol).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pour la programmation en vol, c'est quand même plus simple que de rebrancher le contrôleur à l'ordinateur et de tout reprogrammer, même si ça nécessite plus de travail de la part du programmeur, ça en vaut la peine.. La méthode Whammy (entrer en mode programmation à l'allumage en appuyant un switch) est assez facile à mettre en oeuvre.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Voilà donc un projet assez colossal sur papier, assez simple dans sa conception électronique, très répétitif (8 fois le même circuit pour les relais), et nécessitant un bon paquet de lignes de code. Dans mon cas, il me restait des plateaux de 75x51 de mon déménagement, j'ai coupé une latte, ce qui donne une surface utile de 75x39 cm, largement suffisant.. La latte coupée servira à surélever l'arrière du pedalboard, pour placer les alims et mon PSU dessous.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J'ai également trouvé un rouleau de moquette acoustique noire (ce qu'on met sur les plages arrières de voiture) chez Feu Vert pour 13€, de dimensions 70x130 cm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a pour les PCB) nos boitiers Hammond bien connus..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Le PSU et la Twin Peaks vont donc y passer, le design de la Twin changeant légèrement au passage..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Je Peaks, une réverb Behringer et un accordeur).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il est donc temps d'oublier les transfos individuels, qui convenaient jusqu'à lors (avec 2 pédales, ça passe), pour songer à l'alimentation plus ou moins isolée de ces petites boites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Voici donc ce dont j'aurai besoin:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7 sorties 9V réparties sur 2 régulateurs (3+4 en parallèle), alimentés par un transfo 500mA.&lt;br /&gt;3 sorties 12V réparties sur 2 régulateurs (1+2 en parallèle), alimentés par 2 transfos 500mA, on a donc une branche 12V complètement isolée des autres, capable d'alimenter un gros projet à lampes BT (la Twin Peaks par exemple).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J'utiliserai des petits transfos que j'ai trouvé sous forme de bloc d'alim multi-tensions chez type='text'>Pédale de volume</title><content type='html'>J'en aurai besoin d'une pour contrôler le gain en entrée de la Twin Peaks, ou de tout autre étage de saturation qui se trouvera derrière.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La particularité, c'est qu'elle est faite en plexiglas. Je me suis basé sur le design des pédales de volume de marque Ernie Ball, donc la conception est assez simple (moins mécaniquement complexe que les pédales wah à la Vox ou CryBaby, à crémaillère). On retrouve donc une ficelle tendue et un système de poulies pour actionner le potentiomètre.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;L'électronique est très simple: 2 jacks, entrée/sortie, et un potard de volume. Deux de ces boosters à base de 12AU7 sont mis en série, avec chacun un contrôle de gain, épaulé par un switch permettant de doubler le gain sur chaque étage, et des contrôles de tonalité et de volume en fin de course.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il sera appuyé par un booster à base de BS170 comme on en trouve dans les SuperHardOn de Zvex. Le tout semble tenir (sur papier en tout cas) dans une Hammond BB.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ce qui rend ce montage intéressant, c'est les tubes qui sont alimentés en 12V, pas de haute tension, ni de transformateur. Si la LED faiblit, il faut penser à avoir une pile sous la main. Quand la LED est complètement éteinte, il est temps de changer la pile.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Comment ça marche?&lt;br /&gt;J'utilise une diode Zener pour obtenir une tension fixe, que je nommerai Vz. Elle est branchée avec une résistance de polarisation aux bornes de la pile, ce qui fait qu'aux bornes de cette résistance, on a la différence entre la tension de la pile et la tension de référence Vz.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J'envoie cette tension sur la base d'un transistor NPN avec une résistance d'émetteur. Il possède également des interfaces série et ICSP pour la programmation, et un bus d'émission/réception série.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C'est un microcontrôleur programmable en C, un logiciel servant de compilateur et de programmateur est disponible sur le site d'Arduino.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Je l'ai acheté sous forme de kit chez &lt;a href="http://picovario.free.fr/shop/index.php?productID=16"&gt;ElectroShop&lt;/a&gt; pour 22€ (frais de ports gratuits, reçu en moins de 24h !), ça se monte facilement, tous les composants sont inclus. Il manque seulement une interface USB-Série pour pouvoir le programmer. L'ATmega est préchargé avec le bootloader, donc il suffit tout simplement de le brancher à l'ordinateur et de charger son programme.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il s'agit d'une version du module Arduino destinée à s'implanter sur un breadboard, pour les essais. Hormis l'interface de programmation USB-Série, le BoArduino partage les mêmes caractéristiques que son grand frère l'Arduino Diecimila.
